Siamo nel pieno di una situazione paradossale: sospinti da un’accelerazione sempre più accanita, a causa di un’innovazione tecnologica che non conosce e non si dà alcun limite, ma bloccati all’interno di un presente incapace di previsioni e di grandi progetti per il futuro. Anche perché è la possibilità stessa del futuro a non essere più certa: quando si è confrontati, come lo siamo oggi, con un’apocalissi aggiornata in senso ecologico. Sappiamo che cosa è andato storto nel nostro processo di civilizzazione, ma non riusciamo a tradurre questa consapevolezza in efficaci piani di azione. Quella libertà che nei secoli è servita a compiacere il nostro sentimento di sufficienza nei confronti della natura si trova oggi confrontata a nuove forme della necessità inaggirabili, talvolta distruttive e letali, che sembrano minarla alla sua stessa radice. Ne risulta uno spaesamento che si riverbera non solo sul senso del tempo ma anche sulla certezza della nostra identità; li annienta, senza offrire loro appigli per nuove narrazioni di ciò che siamo e desideriamo. La ludificazione dell’esistenza a cui assistiamo a vari livelli (formativo, culturale, consumistico) è una scappatoia insostenibile che ci riporta ogni volta di nuovo, e con una più acuta consapevolezza, al punto di partenza. E allora che fare? L’incontro settembrino delle Eranos Tagungen, con il suo consueto stile interdisciplinare, cercherà di rispondere a questa domanda, in cui si mette in gioco il significato stesso della nostra umanità, quando tutto attorno noi sembra andare nella direzione della distruzione di quei valori con i quali abbiamo voluto affermare una superiorità morale rispetto ad altre culture e civiltà. Se nessun nostos è più disponibile, poiché il ritorno a “casa” sarebbe solo un ripercorre strade cieche, allora è proprio dal sentimento dello spaesamento che dobbiamo provare a ripartire, per tentare nuove forme di vita capaci di riconoscimento e solidarietà.

We are in the midst of a paradoxical situation: propelled by an ever-increasing acceleration, due to a technological innovation that knows no limits and gives itself no limits, but stuck within a present incapable of forecasts and big plans for the future. Not least because it is the very possibility of the future that is no longer certain: when confronted, as we are today, with an "updated" apocalypse in an ecological sense. We know what has gone wrong in our civilizing process, but we fail to translate this awareness into effective plans of action. That freedom that over the centuries has served to please our feeling of sufficiency toward nature is now confronted with new forms of the inescapable, sometimes destructive and deadly necessity that seem to undermine it at its very root. The result is a bewilderment that reverberates not only on our sense of time but also on the certainty of our identity; it annihilates them, without offering them footholds for new narratives of what we are and desire. The ludification of existence that we witness at various levels (educational, cultural, consumerist) is an unsustainable loophole that brings us back again and again, and with heightened awareness, to where we started. So what to do? The September meeting of the Eranos Tagungen, with its usual interdisciplinary style, will try to answer this question, in which the very meaning of our humanity is at stake, when everything around us seems to be going in the direction of the destruction of those values with which we have wanted to assert a moral superiority over other cultures and civilizations. If no nostos is any longer available, since returning to "home" would only be a retracing of blind paths, then it is precisely from the feeling of disorientation that we must try to start again, to attempt new forms of life capable of recognition and solidarity.

Nous sommes dans une situation paradoxale : poussés par une accélération toujours plus grande, due à une innovation technologique qui ne connaît pas de limites et ne se donne pas de limites, mais coincés dans un présent incapable de prévisions et de grands projets d'avenir. Aussi parce que c'est la possibilité même de l'avenir qui n'est plus certaine : quand on est confronté, comme aujourd'hui, à une apocalypse actualisée au sens écologique. Nous savons ce qui n'a pas fonctionné dans notre processus de civilisation, mais nous ne parvenons pas à traduire cette prise de conscience en plans d'action efficaces. La liberté qui, au fil des siècles, a servi à satisfaire notre sentiment de suffisance à l'égard de la nature est aujourd'hui confrontée à de nouvelles formes de nécessité non moins agressives, parfois destructrice et mortelle, qui semblent la saper à la racine même. Il en résulte une désorientation qui se répercute non seulement sur notre sens du temps, mais aussi sur la certitude de notre identité ; elle les anéantit, sans leur offrir de points d'appui pour de nouveaux récits de ce que nous sommes et de ce que nous désirons. La ludification de l'existence à laquelle nous assistons à différents niveaux (éducatif, culturel, consumériste) est une faille insoutenable qui nous ramène à chaque fois, et avec une conscience accrue, au point de départ. Que faire alors ? La rencontre de septembre des Eranos Tagungen, avec son style interdisciplinaire habituel, tentera de répondre à cette question, dans laquelle le sens même de notre humanité est en jeu, alors que tout autour de nous semble aller dans le sens de la destruction des valeurs avec lesquelles nous avons cherché à affirmer une supériorité morale sur d'autres cultures et civilisations. S'il n'y a plus de nostos, si le retour à la maison n'est qu'un retour à l'aveugle, c'est précisément à partir du sentiment de désorientation qu'il faut essayer de repartir, de tenter de nouvelles formes de vie capables de reconnaissance et de solidarité.

Wir befinden uns in einer paradoxen Situation: getrieben von einer immer stärkeren Beschleunigung durch eine technologische Innovation, die keine Grenzen kennt und sich selbst keine Grenzen setzt, aber gefangen in einer Gegenwart, die nicht in der Lage ist, Prognosen und große Pläne für die Zukunft zu machen. Auch weil gerade die Möglichkeit der Zukunft nicht mehr sicher ist: wenn man, wie heute, mit einer im ökologischen Sinne aktualisierten Apokalypse konfrontiert ist. Wir wissen, was in unserem Zivilisationsprozess schiefgelaufen ist, aber wir schaffen es nicht, dieses Bewusstsein in wirksame Aktionspläne umzusetzen. Die Freiheit, die im Laufe der Jahrhunderte dazu diente, unser Gefühl der Suffizienz gegenüber der Natur zu befriedigen, sieht sich heute mit neuen, nicht weniger aggressiven, manchmal zerstörerischen und tödlichen Notwendigkeiten konfrontiert, die sie an der Wurzel zu untergraben scheinen. Das Ergebnis ist eine Desorientierung, die nicht nur auf unser Zeitgefühl, sondern auch auf die Gewissheit unserer Identität zurückwirkt; sie vernichtet sie, ohne ihnen Halt für neue Erzählungen über das, was wir sind und was wir wollen, zu bieten. Die Verblödung der Existenz, die wir auf verschiedenen Ebenen (Bildung, Kultur, Konsum) erleben, ist ein unhaltbares Schlupfloch, das uns jedes Mal mit geschärftem Bewusstsein an den Ausgangspunkt zurückbringt. Was ist also zu tun? Die Eranos-Tagungen im September werden in gewohnt interdisziplinärer Weise versuchen, eine Antwort auf diese Frage zu geben, bei der der Sinn unseres Menschseins auf dem Spiel steht, wenn alles um uns herum auf die Zerstörung jener Werte zuzusteuern scheint, mit denen wir versucht haben, eine moralische Überlegenheit gegenüber anderen Kulturen und Zivilisationen zu behaupten. Wenn kein Nostos mehr zur Verfügung steht, da eine Rückkehr „nach Hause“ nur eine Umkehrung blinder Wege wäre, dann müssen wir gerade aus dem Gefühl der Orientierungslosigkeit heraus versuchen, neu anzufangen, neue Formen des Lebens zu versuchen, die zu Anerkennung und Solidarität fähig sind.

Dal 2021, la Fondazione Eranos dedica i suoi Convegni annuali (Eranos Tagungen) a una figura straordinaria della storia della medicina contemporanea, il luminare Peter Anton Miescher (1923-2020), e a sua moglie Annatina (1924-2016), compagna di vita, interlocutrice privilegiata, pittrice sensibile. Desidera così esprimere la sua gratidune a due persone che in tempi e modalità diverse hanno mostrato un grande affetto nei confornti della dalla nostra istituzione. Pioniere nello studio delle malattie autoimmuni, Peter Anton Miescher è stato Professore di Medicina al Bellevue Medical Center dell'Università di New York; Professore e Direttore del Centro Trasfusionale e della Divisione di Ematologia clinica e sperimentale all’Università di Ginevra; Consulente di Immunoematologia clinica per l’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità; e Consulente per il Ministero della Sanità cinese. I suoi studi teorici e sperimentali, così come la sua pratica clinica, unite a uno spirito innovativo e intrepido, gli hanno consentito di fare importanti scoperte, il cui esito, in ultima analisi, è stato quello di rivoluzionare la cura delle malattie autoimmuni. Uomo di immensa cultura, collezionista e musicista, umanista curioso, negli ultimi anni della sua vita ha voluto condividere con la Fondazione Eranos l’organizzazione di due simposi extra-muros, svoltisi presso il museo del Castello di Tarasp (2018 e 2019), sulle grandi questioni esistenziali che interessano oggi le nostre società. L’amicizia di cui la Fondazione ha potuto beneficiare si è anche tradotta in una importante donazione, grazie alla quale sarà possibile offrire al nostro pubblico un incontro annuale di studio sui temi universali (l’arte, la spiritualità, il senso della vita) che più gli stavano a cuore. Una occasione per conservarne e condividerne la memoria e dimostrare la nostra gratitudine.
Since 2021, the Eranos Foundation has dedicated their annual Conferences (Eranos Tagungen) to an extraordinary figure in the history of contemporary medicine, the luminary Peter Anton Miescher (1923-2020), and to his wife Annatina (1924-2016), a life companion, privileged interlocutor, and sensitive painter. It thus wishes to express its gratidune to two people who at different times and in different ways showed great affection in confornti of our institution. A pioneer in the study of autoimmune diseases, Peter Anton Miescher was Professor of Medicine at Bellevue Medical Center of New York University; Professor and Director of the Transfusion Center and Division of Clinical and Experimental Hematology at the University of Geneva; Consultant of Clinical Immunohematology to the World Health Organization; and Consultant for the Chinese Ministry of Health. His theoretical and experimental studies, as well as his clinical practice, combined with an innovative and intrepid spirit, allowed him to make important discoveries whose outcome, ultimately, was to revolutionize the treatment of autoimmune diseases. A man of immense culture, collector and musician, curious humanist, in the last years of his life he wanted to share with the Eranos Foundation the organization of two extra-muros symposia, held at the museum of Tarasp Castle (2018 and 2019), on the great existential questions that affect our societies today. The friendship from which the Foundation was able to benefit also took the form of an important donation, thanks to which it will be possible to offer our audience an annual study meeting on the universal themes (art, spirituality, the meaning of life) that were most dear to him. An occasion to preserve and share his memory and to show our gratitude.
